Customer Project

Single Seat Race Car

The particular car had a race loom manufactured by the factory that built the car. Its functionality was fine, but the components used were perhaps not ideal. It did the job, but over time it developed an intermittent electrical gremlin with the engine and it was not serviceable. We offered the customer the opportunity to leave the car with us whilst we stripped the old harness out.

With our experience with other electronic race equipment, the customer wanted us to not only provide a 3 piece race loom, but to also supply a new ECU and a full data logging system. The Customer wanted a MoTeC M800 ECU and we recommended the new steering wheel data system from Farringdon. This comes complete with paddleshifts which will work with the current Pro-Shift gear change system.

The above shots show how many wires over the years have been laid over the main loom, this not only adds weight but also makes it very hard to pin point faults. Unfortunately the wire used is just a standard Def Stan wire, which is prone to failures from vibrations and harsh environments. The heatshrink sleeving is also just a standard commercial grade and again will not work well in high temperature plus will not be resistant to fluids such as Oil and Petrol.

The above shows the dash area of the car, after removing the main data logging harness. This alone saved nearly 4kg in weight. The next stage is to draw and design harness. This will be done using our CAD software. Check back later on to see the next stage.
